How Does The New Google Medic Algorithm Update Affect Your Website Ranking?

On August 1st, 2018, Google released an update for their algorithm, making it the third algorithm of 2018. Many in the SEO community are referring to this update as the biggest one since 2012’s Penguin. The update was picked up all the search monitoring tools, as we saw a spike around the first few days of the month and the continued fluctuations that lasted a week. It was then named ‘The Medic Core Algorithm Update’.
Usually, Google does not announce an algorithm update beforehand. However, this, along with the March 9th update, was announced prior to the update. It was a broad core algorithm, which is Google’s attempt to move away from the major, irregular updates, such as Panda, Pigeon, Possum, etc. These larger updates have a tendency to send shockwaves through the content and SEO industry, which is possibly why Google is shifting away from them.
google-algorithm-updateThis update seems to have affected both the local results (i.e. maps listings) and organic search results. It has changed the local and organic ranking algorithms. One of the sectors that had the highest impact was the ‘Your Money or Your Life’ (YMYL) websites. YMYL pages include content that affects someone’s financial stability, safety, happiness, and/or health. Though Google itself has not disclosed much information regarding this algorithm update, the SEO communities and forums have highlighted a few factors, which are mobile first-index, content and on-site linking, and site speed.
Many are concerned as to whether their website’s ranking will remain the same. Before anything else, it’s important to recognize that SEO and keyword research are not dead. They are just evolving into a new era that’s driven mostly by voice search and mobile technology. According to HubSpot, 19% of people use artificial intelligence, such as Siri, to get their information.
Modern searches are based on the commonly asked phrases and questions. Thus, meaning that tools like SEMrush and Google Keyword Planner are still important to implement in your marketing research. Since more focus is starting to be on lifestyle and health issues, it might be why the new update is called the ‘medic update’.
Some sites saw massive drops, but others saw incredible gains. The reason why some of the websites might have dropped in rating could be due to many things.
  1. They might not have an about page – Google’s QRG clearly states that it should be obvious to the consumers who are responsible for the information that is presented on a website. Clear information helps users to feel more comfortable in trusting a site.
  2. Very little extra reputation – If your site sells a product, then it should have a really good reputation. If there is a lack of reputation, or a negative reputation (even if its mild) can be a sign of low quality.
  3. The site may be advocating a treatment (medical) that is against the consensus– If you sell any health-related products that have a negative reputation or no backing, then you might find your ranking getting lower, then the algorithm might trust you less.
Google is not always forthcoming in ways that you can update or change your site to better suit the new algorithm. However, there are a few steps that you can take as a precaution and if you’re looking to increase visibility and stay up to date.
  1. Eliminate any errors your site has/may have – incl. duplicate images, links, etc.
  2. Make sure that your website design is responsive
  3. Ensure that your social media icons are placed in prominent positions to further encourage social sharing.
  4. Aim to publish fresh, remarkable content at least once a week.
  5. Include visual and video content in your blog posts.
  6. Make sure to set up a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page on your website.
  7. Remain active on social platforms – incl. (but not limited to) Google Plus, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook.
  8. Reach your to subscribers with emails that include incentives and helpful information.
As we mentioned before, mobile first-index, content and on-site linking, and site speed were factors that were rewarded quite well with this update. So, with those factors, how can you avoid suffering from bad search results and less website traffic?
In terms of Mobile First-Indexing, any website that does not have a mobile version, not responsive, or they have a separate mobile site – will not be treated well under the new update. Various brands have been complaining this past month over their rankings, but more often than not, these brands do not have a correct mobile version. In addition to that, you should have clear information above the fold, not hide their content, and do not cover up the content with pop-ups.
Content is king, especially if you want to rank high on Google’s search engines. Google has suggested that websites should have Expertise, Authority, and Trust (EAT) in order to rank well. Bloggers are likely to reference other websites quite often since they will be basing their opinions on other reputable sources. Whereas, legitimate medical professional won’t need to as they are writing their opinions without needing to reference others.
Site speed and loading time have been important to Google’s ranking scale for a long time. And now, more than ever, it’s crucial in order to get good results. If a site had ranked at the first position even with poor site speed, that won’t be the case anymore. Designers and SEOs should first and foremost look at the site speed when designing a website. You should include compressing images to be under 100kb, browser caching, and compressing code wherever possible.

Overall, this ‘medic core’ update seems to be geared towards making content more authoritative. It also enables users to have a better experience browsing on mobile with faster load times across devices. As ranking higher with a basic design and adding content has certainly made SEO harder than ever before. Though the health industry was the main focus of this update, all SEO professionals need to stay on top of their game. Otherwise, they might find the update having an impact on their websites.

Core Algorithm (Medic) Update – August 2018

In a big start to August 2018, Google started rolling out a ‘core’ algorithm update. Trusted SEO sources such as Search Engine Land and Search Engine Round Table have reported the rollout, as well as Google’s Search Liaison Danny Sullivan.
@dannysullivan How long do you anticipate this broad algorithm to take to settle out. It would be great to get an approximate idea of what my rankings will actually look like after so much fluctuation. TIA
A few days. Say by middle of next week, should be fully rolled out.
Whilst it’s a core update, it’s been dubbed the ‘Medic Update’ by people int he industry because it seems to have mainly effected websites in the medical industry (including ecommerce websites selling medical or pharmaceutical products). Other industries that seem to have had fluctuations include finance, insurance, B2B services, deal sites and entertainment sites.
Many people are also reporting that this is one of the more significant updates that has occurred in the last couple of years when looking at search metrics.

According to Google, core update occur to improve the overall quality of the search results provided to users. Most core updates are global and non-specific to certain industries so this one seems to be unique in that sense.

5 points of emphasis in the new Google algorithm and what that means for your SEO

G
oogle’s search algorithm changes a lot. Since 2000, there have been hundreds of large and small updates (you can view the full list here) that affect whether your content climbs or falls down search engine results pages (SERPs). For marketers, this means a new Google algorithm is always on the horizon.
These frequent and tight-lipped algorithm changes lead to much speculation around how businesses can change their SEO strategy to stay at the top of the rankings. While we never know exactly how the algorithm changes, in this post, we’re going to look at five areas you should pay attention to, to help adapt your SEO strategy accordingly.

1. Mobile-first index

With 60% of searches now performed on mobile devices, mobile compatibility is increasingly important as Google shifts its focus from mobile-friendly to mobile-first. The search giant has already split its search index in two—one for mobile, one for desktop, and announced back in November 2016 that mobile would eventually take priority:
“Our algorithms will eventually primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank pages from that site, to understand structured data, and to show snippets from those pages in our results.”
That time has now come. In 2018, Google will combine the two search indexes into one, which will prioritise mobile when crawling.
What should you do?
Check how suited your website currently is to mobile browsing with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test, which will tell you if your website is easy to use on a mobile device.
You must ensure your mobile site performs as well (if not better) than your desktop site. This means all your site elements must be functional and crawlable on mobile. It’s no longer enough to have a link to ‘view on desktop’ for webpages that don’t perform well on smartphones.

2. More focus on Featured Snippets

‘Featured Snippets’ appear above regular results on SERPs (referred to as position #0). So, if you can rank for them, they can provide a serious boost to your click-through rate and site traffic. Featured Snippets take many forms, from lists or reviews to event dates and answer boxes.
Google are going to continue to expand Featured Snippets in 2018, giving more importance to structured data. Structured data is a line of code that you can add to your site’s HTML that can provide Featured Snippets (also known as rich search results). By adding structured data, you can, for example, score an answer box for a common customer pain point in your industry or create a Knowledge Card for a more visually appealing overview of your company.
What should you do? Here’s what you need to do to add the structured data for Featured Snippets into your HTML:
  • Customize the code snippet
  • Create a Google Tag Manager tag
  • Paste the code into the “Custom HTML” text box and save the tag
  • Create a new trigger
  • Return to “Schema markup” and add the “Page view” as it’s trigger
  • Publish
  • Test using the Structured Data Testing Tool
Look out for an upcoming tutorial post on how-to create featured snippets to get your content up Google’s search rankings!

3. Telling it how it is

Voice search has been one of the biggest growers thanks to AI assistants like Cortana, Alexa and Google Assistant. In the past 10 years, voice searches on Google have grown 3,500%, and 40% of adults now use voice search once per day.
As we can expect this upward trend to continue, this puts further focus on mobile optimisation. But voice search also has the potential to change the structure of search terms. We can predict more ‘natural’ search phrases will come through voice search, as people tend towards asking more fully-formed questions.
It’s worth noting that voice search will work hand-in-hand with Featured Snippets moving forward as AI like Google Assistant will read featured snippets aloud as the answer to querying search terms.
What should you do? Voice search will use longtail keywords – more conversational phrases should be used when optimizing for voice search. Your keyword strategy should match this. As they are more specific, long tail keywords generally have a lower search volume, but that also results in less competition and a higher conversion rate, i.e. the people searching for those longtail keywords know what they want.
Consider posing your voice search phrases as questions: “How to improve my SEO score?” for example. If you can combine this with Featured Snippet answers, you can make a considerable jump up Google’s SERP.

4. ‘Linkless’ mentions

In 2017, Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Gary Illyes suggested that Google can now associate mentions without a physical link. These so-called ‘linkless mentions’ (i.e. positive reviews, testimonies, and other un-linked mentions of your company) will play a factor in SEO.
What to do: Try to gain as many positive mentions of your company, its products and people as possible. Whether it’s on your blog, website, or on external sites, Google will treat these testimonials favouringly, even if they are not hyperlinked. Don’t neglect real links, though, as these still give these mentions substance and evidence if people want to check what you’re saying is true. This isn’t an excuse to start embellishing your company!

5. Security-centric

Google admitted a while back that they prefer HTTPS sites in terms of security, and so rank them a little higher. In their recent roadmap, they revealed that in 2018 they will start punishing publishers who fail to add an SSL to their site.
What should you do? By enabling an SSL (secure socket layer) on your site, you can ensure any information going to and from your server is encrypted. This is what differentiates “https” from “http” (the ‘S’ stands for secure) and is a must if your site uses things like geolocation, online payments, or notifications that require the confidential transferral of information. Acquiring an SSL isn’t difficult—all you have to do is purchase a certificate and get your site host to activate and install it. The first free SSL certificates are being introduced, too.

Google Algorithm Update: August 2018 (Did Your Rankings Drop?)

It’s believed that sometime around May 18th, a significant charge was made to Google’s algorithm that has affected many top sites in a negative way.
Of course, due to their only being up to “10 blue links” on a page, this means a lot of sites have received positive improvements from these updates as well.
Something to keep in mind if you have been affected by these updates is that there are said to be 500 to 600 Google algorithm updates each year.
There’s really no surprise in seeing that “something has changed” and your rankings and traffic can be impacted by that.
Something you should always keep in mind when it comes to overall search results is whether you are really the best result for a user query?.
Of course, there are things you can do to improve rankings such as on-site SEO, being optimised for answer boxes (rank zero) and building links to your site, but it’s important to keep in mind “What Google might be thinking.”
If your design needs work, your user experience isn’t great and others provide better value to search users, that could be at the core of your problems.
Something people mistakenly think is a Google algorithm update may actually be something else that is negatively impacting a websites rankings.
For example, one reader reached out to me about a possible negative SEO attack he had received on his health blog.
This turned out to be a manual penalty for schema markup that the webmaster hadn’t noticed.
